A little historical summary of St. Andrew's Church and the older community of Our Lady of Angels Church.
Fr. Francis French, the successor of Fr. McCormac in Brudenell, served Killaloe Station in the years before St. Andrew's was established. He celebrated Mass in the store of the Dunnigan brothers in Killaloe until 1897 when a small chapel was built on the site of the present church.
On July 8, 1899, Bishop Lorrain blessed and erected a cornerstone for a new church. The following year the bishop returned to bless the new edifice, a new bell, and a newly erected cemetery. On October 26, 1901, this mission was elevated to a parish and Fr. Isaiah French, brother of Fr. Francis, was named the first pastor.
The original church was replaced by the present structure under the direction of Fr. J. Schruder. Work began on September 16, 1960 and was completed the following year. Various changes were made in the years following the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965).
Today this simple but elegant church continues to be of service to the community.
The earliest record of baptisms dates to 1862. The area had been serviced from Mt. St. Patrick as early as 1850. About this time, a log chapel, dedicated to St. James was built next to the old cemetery.
Later the parish was ministrated from St. James', Eganville. Fr. P.M. Cody, assistant in Eganville, moved to Brudenell and served there from 1862 until 1867. Fr. James McCormac became the first pastor on November 1, 1867.
A new stone church was constructed under the leadership of Fr. McCormac. Work began in 1868. The cornerstone was laid in 1870 and in 1871, Bishop Guigues of Ottawa consecrated the new church in 1871. The total cost of construction was $5,000.00. Funds were raised by the 200 families which made up the new parish.
The church has continued to serve the area since 1870 and is still the pride and joy of local residents.
